What to Do Immediately After a Car Accident in Edmonton

By James Whitfield, Edmonton Injury Law

Every year, thousands of car accidents happen on Edmonton roads and the surrounding highway network. If you've been in a collision, the steps you take in the immediate aftermath matter more than most people realize. Insurance companies analyze your early statements and actions closely, and mistakes made in the first 24 hours can significantly reduce your compensation.

Step 1: Ensure Safety First

If you can move safely, turn on your hazard lights and move your vehicle out of traffic. Check yourself and your passengers for injuries. If anyone is hurt, including you, call 911 immediately. Even if injuries seem minor, it is always worth having paramedics assess you at the scene.

Step 2: Call the Police

In Alberta, you must report a collision to police if it involves injury, a fatality, or total property damage exceeding $2,000. Even for smaller accidents, having a police report creates an official record that supports your insurance claim. Get the officer's name and badge number, and request a copy of the report.

Step 3: Document Everything

Use your phone to photograph: the damage to all vehicles, the accident scene from multiple angles, the road conditions, weather, traffic signals, and any visible injuries. This visual evidence is invaluable. Also note the time, exact location, and any witnesses.

Step 4: Exchange Information, But Be Careful What You Say

Get the other driver's name, contact information, licence plate, driver's licence number, and insurance details. Be polite but avoid saying "I'm sorry" or admitting any fault, even casually. These statements can be used against you by insurers.

Step 5: Seek Medical Attention

See a doctor within 24 hours even if you feel fine. Whiplash, concussions, and soft-tissue injuries often don't show symptoms immediately. A medical record from the day of or day after your accident connects your injuries directly to the collision, which is critical for your claim.

Step 6: Report to Your Insurer, Then Call a Lawyer

You have a duty to report the accident to your insurer promptly. However, before giving a detailed statement or accepting any settlement offer, speak with a personal injury lawyer. Initial offers are almost always lower than fair value, and accepting early can forfeit your right to additional compensation if your injuries worsen.
